With some of the best irradiation figures worldwide and its unique wind resources, Argentina’s renewable energy potential seems to be unlimited. In 2016, the awakening of the sleeping giant was driven mainly by political transition, the implementation of the renewable energy legal framework and the RenovAR tender program as well as the brand-new private PPA market.
With four tenders already executed totaling 4.4 GW of renewable energy projects awarded, Argentina is undergoing further significant energy transition towards its target of 20% renewable energy by 2025. SOWITEC has been present in the country since 2006 with a competent team and is developing a mix of advanced and greenfield projects for the company’s wind and solar portfolio. In Argentina’s first tender, one of the projects developed by SOWITEC won with the lowest awarded price and will enter into operation during 2018.

Chile
Chile’s Atacama region has some of the best irradiation worldwide and a huge potential volume for the national consumption and exportation of energy. The government announced the goal of having 100% clean energy (renewable energy including hydro) by 2040. SOWITEC arrived in Chile in 2007 and has a proven track record of a wind projects in operation since 2013. Currently, the local team alongside a fiscal entity (CPL) led a benchmark-setting early engagement process where indigenous communities were involved through a participation platform during the development stage of the project. In addition to the high quality of the technical development of the pipeline, SOWITEC Chile can ensure the best risk mitigation possible regarding social conflicts in its projects.

Colombia
SOWITEC is a pioneer in the Colombian market, establishing a subsidiary in 2012, screening the best sites in the country and quickly establishing a team and project pipeline of greenfield projects. In 2014 the Colombian government gave a clear signal that the country was creating the necessary mechanisms to integrate wind and solar within the energy matrix and SOWITEC pushed its investments and activities to consolidate its project pipeline.
Today, SOWITEC Colombia develops a highly competitive and low risk project portfolio, a result of its pioneering presence in the market and its highly qualified team of 16 professionals. In terms of strategy, SOWITEC has significantly advanced in securing the existing grid capacities for the short and medium term and is currently preparing over 1 GW of projects for a potential auction participation in 2018.

Germany
Renowned worldwide for the transformation of its energy system, the so-called Energiewende, Germany has one of the highest shares of wind-generated electricity and is the home country of SOWITEC. One of the pioneers of Germany’s renewable energy sector, SOWITEC developed and installed Southern Germany’s first wind farm in 1995. Since then, we have developed more than 30 wind farms in Germany and continue to develop projects and promote the use of renewable energy in our home state of Baden-Württemberg.

Kazakhstan
With 50% of its territory having average wind speeds of 4-5 m/s at a height of 30 m, Kazakhstan has an enormous potential for wind power generation at about 1,820 billion KW/h per year. With 2,200 to 3,000 sun hours per year, the solar energy resources of the country are also stable and favorable. SOWITEC arrived in the country in 2013 and its young team of excellent specialists developed a prospective greenfield pipeline ready to be activated once an investor states their interest.

Kenya
Entering Africa for the first time, SOWITEC opened its Kenyan subsidiary in 2016. Due to its increasing population and economic growth, Kenya’s electricity demand will rapidly rise in the coming years. Given its tremendous potential for renewable energy production, with some of the world’s best solar and wind resources, Kenya has the opportunity to fulfil its future electricity demand with clean, sustainable energy. Developing a pipeline of solar and wind projects, the SOWITEC Kenya team will play an important role in the country’s transformation.

Mexico
SOWITEC’s Mexican subsidiary started in 2008 as a pioneering renewable energy developer in the country, establishing an office that progressively grew into today’s organization of multifunctional teams. SOWITEC Mexico covers the complete project development chain of wind and solar PV power projects, from detailed site screenings for project selection up to the ready-to-build stages.
Under the previous electricity industry regulations, SOWITEC Mexico was able to successfully develop, commercialize and bring to the Mexican grid 877MW of wind power projects, now in operation, an important share of the wind power plants interconnected to the grid prior to the 2014 Mexican energy reform that liberalized the electricity industry market.
The current market environment in Mexico has changed and SOWITEC Mexico is still focused in developing the most competitive wind and solar PV power projects, looking to position them within the different energy supply schemes that the newly liberalized electricity industry market has to offer.

Peru
The strong potential of wind and solar resources of Peru are still waiting to get activated in a more aggressive way. The country has a stable economic growth and an investor friendly environment. The government announced a new regulatory framework for 2019. Beside a new tender scheme, it is expected that the free market through private PPA will be established for renewable energies. This makes Peru one of the most promising renewable energy markets in the region for the near future.
SOWITEC entered into the market in 2007 as one of the first international developers, and now has a great deal of experience in project development under highly competitive market conditions. The company holds a license as an environmental consultant, which allows it to perform the EIA internally and has broad experience in greenfield development up to the ready-to-build phase and participation in the tender process.

Russia
With around 3.6 GW of wind and solar projects auctioned in renewable energy competitive bidding since 2014, Russia has become a globally emerging and dynamic market. Present since 2009, SOWITEC and a strategic partner were part of this success story with 91 MW in wind projects in 2017. Awarded with a PPA for 15 years, once built, the project will be capable of generating around 300 GWh per year, enough to supply over 85,000 households with clean energy while reducing emissions of CO2 by 99,200 t/yr into the atmosphere from 2020.
As a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, SOWITEC will withdraw from this market.

Thailand
SOWITEC expanded its presence into Asia by opening an office in Bangkok, Thailand in 2015. Thailand is strategically located in Southeast Asia and offers immense potential for the development of renewable energy projects. SOWITEC is taking this opportunity to develop a pipeline of 1 GW of wind and solar projects.
Thailand has an extensive transmission network with 99% electrification rate. The government is actively supporting renewable energy projects with feed-in tariff schemes. However, the lack of a clear regulatory environment in recent years has held back renewable energy project development. The government is expected to release new regulations for solar and wind power projects in the near future.

Vietnam
Continuing its expansion into Asia, SOWITEC established its subsidiary in Vietnam in 2017. Given its growth and electricity use projections, Vietnamese government is investing heavily in revamping the electricity grid. The government supports the development of renewable energy projects by providing feed-in tariffs for wind and solar projects.
SOWITEC Vietnam mainly focuses on developing a greenfield pipeline of wind and solar projects. The pipeline is developed in conjunction with international investors and financial institutions.
In 2021, SOWITEC sold its entire activities including a project portfolio of 550 MW.
